The other kids on the bright-white planet call her Smudge. Which is as good a name as any, considering Father never gave her a proper name to begin with. Now if she was only allowed to go to school, maybe someone would want to be her friend. She sneaks out of her house one day to see if she's right.
She's not.
The other kids on Earth call Carter names he doesn't want to think about. But this year he's in middle school, and maybe someone will look past his albinism and want to be his friend. On the last day of summer vacation, his alcoholic mother is in no condition to be out in public. Carter hopes he'll be able to enroll by himself.
He's not.
Smudge runs away to Earth, where she finds that going to school is not what she expected.
Carter is sent to foster care, where he finds a friend who is not what he expected.
Soon Carter and Smudge must decide whether to trust each other, to make the best of this new life that neither expected.
SCHOOL AND OTHER COMPLICATIONS is middle grade urban fantasy, complete at 30,000 words. It stands alone, or can be the beginning of a series. This story will appeal to readers who enjoyed The Secret Sheriff of Sixth Grade and Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to NOT Growing Up.
